School of Applied Technology is established on the basis of the former VocationalSkillsCollege of SYU, and it aims to cultivate personnel of applied technology. The school takes in schooling experience and advantages of vocational schools: serving local economy, promoting employment and cultivating personnel of high application values. It has adhered to the objective of cultivating personnel of high application values directed by region, society and employment since the school became one of the 15 pilot vocational schools of undergraduate education in Liaoning Province in 2012. The school has over 2,300 students with 6 undergraduate majors ofMechanical Design and Automation, Tourist Management, Accountancy, Finance, Visual Communication Design, and Pre-school Education. It has 5 provincial-level demonstration majors, 3 provincial-level teaching teams, 3 provincial-level academic leaders, 5 provincial-level teaching achievement awards, 9 provincial-level quality courses, 2 provincial-level quality textbooks, 1 provincial-level young backbone teacher, and 1 member of steering committee of computer majors of higher education of Liaoning Province. National Vocational Skills Identification Institute, established by Department of Human Resources and Social Security of Liaoning Province, is located in this school, with an aim to conduct multi-vocational and multi-level practical skill training and identification for college students.
The school pays special attention to practical teaching and its reform. It makes scientific and reasonable cultivation plans for personnel of application, and deepens all-round reform in curricular system, teaching content and methods. It operates an innovative schooling mode of “3 plus 1”, i.e., “3 years of on-campus teaching of theories and practical knowledge, and 1 year of off-campus practice at work”. The school puts emphasis on the phase of practical teaching, applies the teaching design of the combination of theory and practice and increases the amount of practical teaching. The school also increases investment amount to build modern high-standard training rooms with an aim to improve students’ practical skills and innovative abilities. It also puts emphasis on the construction of practice bases of school-enterprise cooperation. It has built cooperative relationships with over 70enterprisesto establish practice bases, guaranteeing the cultivation of applied technological personnel and meeting the needs of society.
Students of the school have performed well in “Challenge Cup” National University Students Entrepreneurship Contest and national vocational school skills competitions, and have won championship of oral English contest for non-English majors of vocational skills competition of Liaoning Province, andMarketingmajor students have won third place of team competition and an excellent team prize of multi-skill competition. Representing Liaoning Province, they have also won championship of “HEP Cup” oral English skills contest of national vocational school skills competition (group of vocational colleges) and final contest of the 10thnational practical oral English competition for vocational schools.
With a new starting point in history, the school will adhere to the direction of applied technological educating, and the running positioning of “being local, applicable, technological, and serving students and society”. It aims to build a distinctive and high-level school of applied technology.
