Established in 1980, School of Foreign Languages is one of the largest schools of SYU. It has 3 undergraduate majors of English (includingteachingorientation), Japanese and Russian, and 1 graduate major of International Chinese education. It undertakes the public foreign language teaching tasks of all non-foreign-language major students of SYU.
It consists of 4 departments, namely the departments of English, Japanese, Russian, College English teaching, and an education researchinstitute of Chinese andWesterncultures. It has an individual teaching building with an area of nearly 10,000square meters, equipped withsatellite receivers, foreign language radio transmitters,Autonomous Learning PlatformandExaminationPlatform and foreign languageSelf-access Learning Centerof SYU with 21 modern language labs and simultaneous interpreting rooms.
The school has 131 full-time teachers, with 6 professors, 52 associate professors, 1 excellent teacher of national Baosteel award, 1 provincial-level famous teacher, 2 university-level famous teachers, 4 have doctorate degrees and 87 have master’s degrees, 47 have oversea study experiences and 8 foreign teachers. It has 12 teaching teams with course modules as the main clue. Many teachers have won course teaching awards of provincial, municipal and university levels, and they have also published hundreds of articles, textbooks and translated works. It has built long-term friendship with colleges in Russia, USA, UK and Japan in aspects of student exchange, academic communication, teacher cultivation and intercollegiate cooperation, etc. Students have won several awards in “FLTRP Cup” National English Debating Competition and “CCTV Cup” National English Speech Contest.
